Mabo Day
On 3rd June every year we celebrate MABO Day. It marks the momentous victory to overturn the concept of terra nullis (land belonging to no-one) and honours the legacy of the man behind it – Eddie Mabo. The case was heard in the High Court of Australia over ten years. Sadly, Eddie Mabo died five months before the historic decision was made, so never saw the completion of his life’s work. Notwithstanding, his work is a brilliant example of persistence, passion and inspiration. A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence. We take this opportunity to thank Eddie Mabo, today and every day, for his vision and shaping our views more truthfully around colonisation.
