Indigenous Literacy Day
Today is Indigenous Literacy Day.
Only 36% of Indigenous Year 5 students are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities, according to the 2019 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) https://lnkd.in/gpghUY4a.
Apart from the historical, health, social, and educational disadvantage issues, many remote communities don’t have many, if any, books – with most households in remote communities reporting that they have fewer than five books in their family.
Founded by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, today is Indigenous Literacy Day and there is no better time to either donate books or make a donation.
Get involved and help close the Indigenous literacy gap. To gift books or make a donation visit How you can help | Indigenous Literacy Foundation https://lnkd.in/gzqQE2F.
After all, there are no better story tellers than the richness that comes with indigenous culture and its heritage.
